You probably wouldn't get a brand-new car and plan to never have to put air in the tires, change the oil and check out any unfamiliar noises. Your home comfort system is like your car’s engine, it’s a mechanical device with a motor, electrical components... and even fuel. So it is important to have routine maintenance of your home comfort system by a qualified technician. If not maintained properly and routinely, even the best heating and air conditioning equipment could cause problems and become less 'fuel' efficient over time.
The best method of detection is to use a carbon monoxide detector indoors. A carbon monoxide detector is a device very similar to a smoke alarm. It monitors the air for carbon monoxide and sounds an alarm if a specific level is detected. Ideally, you should have one detector adjacent to every living area, centrally located, or on each floor in your home. Carbon monoxide detectors are very effective when used in combination with preventive maintenance.
My advice would be to change the furnace filter at least once every 4 to 6 weeks during heating season and for air conditioning once a month. In the winter you can use any kind for heat EZ flow, high efficiency or pleated (accordion type) In the summer for air conditioning I only recommend EZ flow or flat filters.
A heating and air conditioning professional should inspect your A/C system at least once each year. Even if you don’t suspect any problems with your air conditioning unit, it’s a good idea to have it inspected, serviced and cleaned once a year — ideally in the spring — to ensure it operates at peak energy efficiency and is ready to cool your house during the months you need it most.
While covering your central air conditioner may keep it looking a little better in the long run, doing so can create a perfect habitat for critters, such as mice. These freeloaders like to use your covered-up air conditioner as luxury living space to get out of the harsh winter conditions, and may make Swiss cheese out of the wiring and other components in the unit.
